How to measure your capacity for a new obligation
A simple measure that shows whether a new obligation will leave you with a comfortable monthly margin.
Add up all current monthly payments, add the expected instalment for the new financing, and divide the total by your monthly income. The result gives a clear picture of how much of your income is committed to obligations.
There is no single figure that fits everyone, but the higher the ratio, the less room you have for emergencies. Keep part of your income for unexpected costs before taking on an additional obligation.
